Dr Kay Danes

Dr Kay Danes has dedicated her life to advancing human rights and humanitarian service, inspired early by her missionary parents and grounded in Christian values of compassion, service and dignity. Throughout her career, she has championed vulnerable communities through advocacy, leadership and global humanitarian work.

A committed Rotarian since 2009, Dr Danes has led impactful initiatives, including coordinating support for 100 paediatric heart surgeries and delivering mental health training to over 250 community leaders in the Philippines. As an ambassador for Borderline Australia, she established The Kay Danes Award for Overall Excellence and secured funding to support young people attending youth programs.

Her work extends to international crises, including coordinating evacuation efforts for at-risk Afghans following the Taliban takeover and successfully advocating for expanded Australian resettlement pathways.

Dr Danes is also a leading advocate for Australian Defence Force members and veterans. She has driven reform efforts to address systemic issues linked to suicide and self-harm, contributing submissions to the Inspector-General of the ADF and the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. In 2023, she also co-authored a legal brief submitted to The Hague supporting the integrity of Australia’s legal processes.

With over 40 years of service to the Defence and Veteran community, Dr Danes has held numerous leadership roles, including President of Army Families Western Australia, where she developed key wellbeing programs and strengthened collaboration across service groups. Her ongoing commitment continues to provide advocacy, support and hope to those she serves.
