Shannon Parry OAM OLY (Class of 2006) began her rugby journey in 2008 and made her international debut just two years later at the 2010 Women’s Rugby World Cup, marking the start of a distinguished career representing Australia on the world stage.
In 2014, Shannon became a professional rugby sevens player, relocating to Sydney to pursue her ambition of competing at the Olympic Games. That ambition was realised in 2016, when she captained Australia to a historic Gold Medal at the Rio Olympic Games in the inaugural women’s rugby sevens competition. A landmark achievement for Australian sport. Her outstanding service to rugby and her contribution to advancing women’s sport were formally recognised in 2017, when she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).
Following her second Olympic campaign, Shannon returned to the 15-a-side format of the game, bringing her experience and leadership back to where her international career began. She went on to captain the Wallaroos at the Women’s Rugby World Cup, guiding the national team with strength, resilience and professionalism. In 2023, she retired from elite international rugby, concluding a significant 13-year playing career that helped reshape the profile and future of women’s rugby in Australia.
Since retiring from playing in 2023, Shannon has transitioned seamlessly into coaching, continuing to make an impact at the highest levels of the sport. Her leadership and commitment to athlete development were quickly evident, with her team securing a Gold Medal at the Youth Commonwealth Games in Trinidad & Tobago.
