Early Learning Centre – Long Day Care
Co-educational care and learning from the earliest years
The Moreton Bay Colleges’ Early Learning Centre is a co-educational Long Day Care programme where children are nurtured, known and supported to grow. These early years are foundational.
They shape a child’s sense of belonging, confidence, communication and approach to learning. Our educators create an environment where children feel safe to explore, make mistakes, try again and take pride in their progress.
What children experience in the ELC
Children learn through play-based experiences that are intentionally designed to build:
- Social confidence and emotional development
- Language and early communication
- Curiosity, creativity and problem solving
- Foundational early literacy and numeracy awareness
- Independence, persistence and self-regulation
- Physical development through active play and movement
Learning is responsive. Educators observe children closely, follow their interests and extend thinking through purposeful interactions, questions and resources.
Methodology
Play is central, but it is not accidental. It is guided by educators who understand how young children learn best.
Our practice focuses on:
- Learning through relationships and belonging
- Active, hands-on exploration
- Rich language experiences, storytelling and conversation
- Developmentally appropriate routines that build independence
- Opportunities for creativity, sensory exploration and nature play
- Collaborative play that builds social skills and empathy

Due to the strong demand for places at The Early Learning Centre we often have waiting lists. Early enrolment is encouraged.

Kindergarten
Preparing for Primary with confidence, a purposeful year of growth and readiness
Kindergarten at Moreton Bay College provides a structured and enriching programme that prepares children for a smooth transition into Prep.
This is a year where children strengthen foundational skills, deepen independence and develop the habits of learning that support success in Primary School.
Learning approach in Kindergarten
Kindergarten learning is guided by the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guidelines and informed by the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) framework.
Through inquiry-based learning, children are encouraged to:
- Ask meaningful questions
- Explore ideas through investigation and play
- Make connections between concepts and experiences
- Collaborate with others
- Reflect on learning and progress
This approach supports a child to become an active learner, not just a receiver of information.
Intentional teaching, purposeful play
Play remains central in Kindergarten, supported by intentional teaching that builds:
- Early literacy: vocabulary, oral language, phonological awareness, early reading and writing behaviours
- Early numeracy: number sense, patterns, measurement, spatial awareness and reasoning
- Thinking skills: noticing, predicting, comparing, explaining and problem solving
- Social development: cooperation, turn-taking, listening and respectful communication
- Learning behaviours: persistence, attention, independence and confidence with new tasks
Transition to Prep
Being located on the Moreton Bay College campus supports a strong transition into Primary School.
Children benefit from:
- Familiarity with the campus and learning environment
- A shared language of inquiry that continues into Primary
- Structured transition experiences
- Routines and expectations that support readiness and confidence
