Hearts and Minds

' In educating the minds of our youth, we must not forget to educate their hearts. '

- Dalai Lama

The words above capture Moreton Bay College’s holistic approach to education, which is supported by a substantial body of evidence showing that there is a positive correlation between wellbeing and academic outcomes. At Moreton Bay College the wellbeing of each girl is supported via Hearts and Minds, the College’s wellbeing framework. Overarching the Positive Behaviour Policy and related policies, all pastoral programmes, procedures and activities align with Hearts and Minds.

Hearts and Minds is an evidence-based wellbeing framework which consists of five actions that have been shown through research to improve personal wellbeing when embedded into everyday life (New Economics Foundations, 2008).

The five actions are:

Connect

Connect

Talk and listen, be there, feel connected.

Building connections will support and enrich you every day.

Be active

Be active

Do what you can, enjoy what you do. Move your mood.

Exercising makes you feel good. Most importantly, discover a physical activity you enjoy and that suits your level of mobility and fitness.

Take notice

Take notice

Remember the simple things that give you joy

Be curious. Catch sight of the beautiful. Remark on the unusual.

Keep learning

Keep learning

Embrace new experiences. See opportunities, surprise yourself

Learning new things will make you more confident as well as being fun.

Give

Give

Your time, your words, your presence

Seeing yourself, and your happiness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and creates connections with the people around you.

Students are provided with opportunities to explore and practice these five actions in subjects such as Religious Education and Health and Physical Education, and in pastoral programmes. In the Primary Years the students explore the five actions under the umbrella of the PYP Learner Profile and Attitudes. Students are encouraged to take action and to become an agent of positive change throughout their classroom, school and wider community. In the Secondary Years our wellbeing curriculum, the Positive Minds programme, is mapped against the framework and further opportunities to understand and practice the five actions are embedded into year level camps, student leadership, service learning and Form and House activities.

When it comes to the wellbeing of our students, at MBC we seek to be proactive rather than reactive. Hearts and Minds allows that to happen by giving students, parents and staff access to a shared language and strategies around wellbeing, thus setting up optimal conditions for each girl to achieve her personal best in all areas.
